The Way We Work

 : : EN-TRY ONE : :

The very talented @LEIMIA asked me to elaborate on my response to 1 of her posts on twitter. It seems she works in what she calls 3-D sketches before she works on her projects for real. This process has become as important to her it seems as the actual process itself. So has a similar thing happened to me. This is the case for many artists. Louise Bourgeois had her insomnia drawings for example. I have Photography and my Talismans. Talismans are spiritual objects, they are keys to a creative place, and they embody the feeling of that place in visual form in a pure way. It has no intended form, or shape, or order. They just are free expressions of an idea that help me stay tethered to that purity whilst I continue down the creative path so that I don't lose my way. They are the sextant by which I sail in uncharted waters. Over time I found myself placing these objects atop my work as a symbol of completion. They become the property of whoever purchases my work. I ask that the work and the talisman never be separated. As it turns out many Native American cultures practice something similar, especially so in the case of the INUIT, who also have a habit of sacking rocks in the middle of nowhere as an abacus of human visitation. One might say the predecessor of the pin drop in GOOGLE maps... here are some low res images of some of the work I have held onto and their corresponding Talismans. Please forgive the low quality, my new iPhone4 isn't here yet ;-)
